Pregnancy and Post-partum
How can a physical therapist help me during my childbearing years? A trained physical therapist in obstetrics will understand the physiological and anatomical changes as they relate to pregnancy and high-risk pregnancy. Physical therapy examination and intervention will be modified with appropriate precautions relating to pregnant women. Psychosocial issues will need to be addressed in a high-risk pregnancy. Pregnant and postpartum women have connective tissue issues including care of the pelvic floor, abdominal and incision wounds from cesarean sections, and scar tissue from episiotomy or birthing tears that oftentimes require treatment. Your physical therapist will develop an effective core strengthening and tissue healing program that will be individualized according to your body and personal preferences.
Why would I see a physical therapist if I am breast-feeding? Some lactating women are susceptible to blocked milk ducts, which can lead to breast infections. With specialized training your physical therapist can gently remove the blockages manually, thus preventing the development of a breast infection. Signs of a breast infection include redness, pain, and heat on the breast as well as generalized body aches. If you suspect you have an infection, contact your physician immediately for prompt medical attention.
